This copy of a well known Stradivari violin, the Maurin,  LOB 355mm is modelled very closely on the original Stradivari in the Royal Academy of Music Collection. The original violin was a favourite of Roger's for many years when it was regularly played by the late Peter Cropper at concerts in North Yorkshire. Peter was at that time, first violinist with the Lindsay Quartet. The Maurin was included in John Rutson's 1890 bequest, interestingly John Rutson lived at Newby Wiske, in a large house which was the home to North Yorkshire Police, before becoming an outdoor activity centre and is very local to us.
The sound of this violin is expansive and creamy, and amply rewards the player with colours and power. Like the original Stradivari, the back is made from two joined pieces of quarter sawn maple, with a really handsome figure. The belly is of very fine growth spruce, which is both straight and vigorous. The varnish is a lustrous red brown colour, beautifully laid on over a golden ground.
