    He’s gone from carving stone animals on his father’s farm to one of Britain’s most distinguished violin makers….Nick Morrison reports Later this year, Roger Hansell, will give a talk at an International conference of violin makers. He says there are no secrets to violin making: all you need is a good eye. But in choosing a subject for his talk, he gives an insight into what is clearly still a very arcane world. There may not be any secrets, but there are things people don’t know. “I’m sure they wanted me to talk about antiquing, but I’m not going to,” he says.

    Terrence Kennedy attended the Dartington conference on the 10th anniversary of the British Violin Making Association (BVMA) and reports on a series of fascinating lectures plus the first BVMA auction. Friday 16th September 2005 A breezy afternoon of scudding clouds and shafts of sunshine welcomed us back to glorious old Dartington for the BVMA’s 10th anniversary and 11th conference. Slowly the ‘locals’ in the White Hart bar became outnumbered by arrivals from all corners of the UK and further afield.
